Carol Jane (Groenwoldt) McCleary, 90, passed away Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024, at Genesis East Hospital, Davenport.
Carol Groenwoldt was born Nov. 8, 1933, in Davenport, the daughter of Edwin and Mildred (Myers) Groenwoldt. She was united in marriage to Dick McCleary on June 17, 1950, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Davenport, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 27, 2021. They resided their entire married life on the Red Ball Farm in Blue Grass, as well as their winter home in Vero Beach, Fla.
Prior to her retirement, Carol had worked for the Rock Island Arsenal, a lab tech for Drs. Larson and Motto, secretary for McCleary Excavating, a homemaker, and was a volunteer for the Blue Grass American Legion Post 711.
She enjoyed playing Bingo, stamping cards, dining out, gardening, and cooking. Carol was known for her rhubarb pie. She also enjoyed her “bling” and was the epitome of class and elegance.
Most of all she loved being with family and friends and dancing with her beloved husband, Dick.
Funeral services and a celebration of life of Carol J. McCleary will be held on Friday, Sept. 27, at Blue Grass Presbyterian Church in Blue Grass. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. and the service will follow at 11 a.m. A luncheon will be provided immediately after the service. Inurnment will follow at the Blue Grass Cemetery.
Those left to honor her memory include son Tim (Mary) McCleary of Blue Grass; grandchildren Angela (Adam) McCleary-Wheeler of Columbia, Mo., Christopher (Katie) McCleary of Blue Grass; great-grandchildren Addison Wheeler and Ayla McCleary; nieces, nephews, and her “granddog” Toby.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by daughters, Linda and Colleen, her parents, and brother Mike.
Memorials may be made to the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Blue Grass Community Charitable Drop Off Program, or King’s Harvest Pet Rescue.
