Obituary: Donald Hamann

Donald H. Hamann, 92, a resident of Eldridge, passed away on Friday, Sept. 13, 2024, at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 12 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19, at the Chambers Funeral Home in Eldridge.  Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.  Private family graveside services will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Clarissa Cook Hospice House or the Long Grove Christian Church.

He was born in Davenport on Jan. 18, 1932, the son of Albert and Lois (Wiese) Hamann, graduated from Davenport High School and attended St. Ambrose University in Davenport.

In 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Valley Forge in the South Pacific during the Korean Conflict.  Upon his honorable discharge in 1955, he was awarded the National Defense Service Ribbon, the Korean Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Navy Occupation Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon.

On Sept. 26, 1968, he was united in marriage to Judi Harling in Gary, Ind.

Don was an agent and Certified Financial Planner for the Principal Financial Group, retiring in 2001.  In earlier years, he was a loan officer for the Central Trust & Savings Bank in Eldridge for 26 years.

In addition, Don and Judi owned and operated the Rustic Ridge Golf Course in Eldridge for many years.

In his spare time, he enjoyed caring for and restoring his three Model-T Fords, loved to play golf and looked forward to his regular poker and pinochle with his card buddies.

He as a member and past-District Governor of the Eldridge Lions Club, and a member of the Eldridge American Legion as well.

Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife, Judi; his daughters, Susan Hamann of Davenport, Teresa (Gene) Meumann of Eldridge, and Marji (Mike) Szwaya of Naperville, Ill.; his son, Lyn (Diane) Hamann of Sanford, Fla.; his grandchildren, Melissa (Kevin) Sullivan, Meghan (Mike) Gianatasio, Ashley (Shawn) Gill, Jordan (Kendal) Cosgrove, Mallory (Nate) Schmitt, Taylor Herberg and Matthew Szwaya; and seven great-grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his daughter, Pat Hoffmann; his sister, Jean Schilling; and his brother, Allen Hamann.
