Gulf's dead zone shrinks by a third this year

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Aug. 2 said the five-year average size of the dead zone, or hypoxic zone, is 4,347 square miles. Since record-keeping began in 1985, the largest hypoxic zone measured was 8,776 square miles in 2017.
