March 17, 1983: Jim Furlong, proprietor of Furlong’s Tap in Long Grove, was gearing up to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with his customers. The bar planned to serve up 250 lbs. of corned beef, 100 lbs. of cabbage, and 11 kegs of green beer. Furlong’s was one of the area’s “hot spots” for St. Patrick’s Day, and the owner donned all green, including a bow tie made from a $100 bill, and carried a shillelagh, “to protect my $100 bill.”
