Obituary: Evaline Benson

Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Evaline Benson, 98, of Eldridge, were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Bettendorf. Visitation was from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church.  Graveside services were at 2 p.m. on Thursday in St. Paul Cemetery, Mineral Point, Wis.  Memorials may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, Madison, Wis.

Ms. Benson passed away Monday, Aug. 26, 2024, at Grand Haven, Eldridge.  Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, assisted the family.

Evaline Anna Benson was born Nov. 20, 1925, in Mineral Point, a daughter of John and Dorothy (Jelliffe) Benson.  After graduating from high school, she went to nursing school in Chicago.

In her earlier years, she had been a nanny for the Ginn family in Cleveland, Ohio, and then Washington, D.C.  After the Ginn children were grown, she remained in the D.C. area, working as an insurance clerk/specialist at the National Children’s Hospital.

Evaline was committed to her Catholic faith and loved reading and gaining knowledge, along with her other many and varied interests. 

Survivors include her brothers, Claire Benson of Wisconsin, Jim Benson of Minnesota, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister LuLu Belle Sweeney, and brothers Gerald, Gene, Marlin, Warren, John, Malvern “Mel,” and Marion Benson.
