Obituary: Naomi Ihrig

Naomi M. Ihrig, 90, of Maquoketa, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023, at Clover Ridge Place in Maquoketa. 

Naomi Marie Larssen was born on June 2, 1933, at home in Eldridge, to Arthur and Amanda (Claussen) Larssen.  She was educated at Lincoln Country School #7 in rural Eldridge for eight years.  She then attended J.B. Young in Davenport for 9th grade and graduated from Davenport High School in 1951.  She married Paul L. Ihrig on Sept. 30, 1951, in Maquoketa.  They raised nine children, five girls and four boys.  They moved several times until 1978 when they bought an acreage near Maquoketa.  

Naomi had worked at Jack & Jill grocery store in Maquoketa for 33 years, mostly as the produce manager.  Additionally, she had worked at Michel’s Truck Stop in Maquoketa, and for Hawk’s Markings in Maquoketa.  

Naomi was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa, Jackson County Master Gardeners for 20 years, and the Town and Country Quilters, often making veterans quilts. She also volunteered at the local food bank.  She loved spending time with her family and going on girls’ trips, sewing, gardening, playing cards, and visiting casinos. 

Those left to honor her memory include her children, Dennis (Terry) Ihrig of Maquoketa, Sally (Allen) Fier of Charlotte, Gail (Dave) Fischer of DeWitt, Gary (Kathy) Ihrig of Maquoketa, Robert “Bob” (Mary) Ihrig of Long Grove, Bruce (Deb) Ihrig of Maquoketa, Julie (Lynn) Hughes of Cedar Rapids, Cathy (Jeff) Johnson of Maquoketa, and Karen (Michael) Sarchett of Cedar Rapids; 20 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren with four on the way; and two great-great-grandchildren; brother, Jim (Carole) Larssen of Long Grove; and sister-in-law, Sylvia (Ken Kline) Larssen of Park View.  She was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Amanda Larssen; her husband Paul on March 1, 2004; brothers Eugene, Leslie, and Kenneth Larssen; mother-in-law and father-in-law Fred and Mabel Ihrig; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Joyce (Les) Larssen, Jeanne (Kenneth) Larssen, Mildred and Dillon DeMoss, Larry and Lucille Flynn, Melvin and Elneta Kennedy, and Dale and Doris Ihrig.     

A celebration of Naomi’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9 (today), at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa. 

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, Naomi M. Ihrig memorial fund has been established.
