Obituary: Gary Stichter

Gary Stichter, age 87, of Davenport, passed away early Thursday morning, April 18, 2024, at Genesis Medical Center-East in Davenport.

Services took place Tuesday, April 23, at Risen Christ Lutheran Church at 6021 Northwest Blvd, Davenport. Visitation at 10 a.m. with service at 11 a.m. Burial followed at the McCausland Cemetery in McCausland. A food and beverage reception was served at the McCausland Civic Center following the burial.

Gary Leon Stichter was born on Dec. 26, 1936, in McCausland, the first son of the late Emery and Fina (Fuller) Stichter. While growing up in McCausland, Gary attended DeWitt High School, where he met his wife, Dorothy Sorensen. They married on June 16, 1956, at Grace Lutheran Church in DeWitt, where Gary was also baptized. Gary and Dorothy moved to Davenport in 1960 and raised their six children. Dorothy preceded him in death on Feb. 11, 1989.

Gary was a wonderful provider for his family. He was employed in floor-covering for many years before he and Dorothy opened Stichter Carpets & Interiors in Eldridge in 1979. In 1985, they became charter members at Risen Christ Lutheran Church in Davenport. Following retirement, Gary filled his days with family, served as an elder and volunteered countless hours at his church, and worked on his real estate properties.  He enjoyed watching old westerns, mowing grass at the church on hot days, and fishing with his buddies, Emmet and Don.  Gary was always proud of the accomplishments of his family.

He is survived by his children, Pamela (George) Osborn of Donahue, Barbara (James Boone) Stichter of LeClaire, Calvin (Irma) of Houston, Texas, Mark (Lisa) of Davenport, James (Mary) of Cedar Falls, and Jason of Eldridge; dear friend and companion, Ann Goldis; grandchildren, David (Joe Wirth) Osborn, Joseph (Diana) Osborn, Adam (Emily) Osborn, Scott (Rubi) Stichter, Samantha (Jordan) Sinkler, Patrick (Breanna) Schneider, Jimmie (Hillary) Hunter, Meagan Hunter, Jessie Stichter, Joseph Stichter; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Martin; brothers, Rick (Debbie), and Randall; sister-in-law, Vicki Stichter; brother-in-law Dean Swanke; and many nieces and nephews.

Along with his wife, Dorothy, Gary was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Gary August Stichter; brothers Roger (Jackie), Harry, Donald, and Darold; a sister, Shirley Swanke; brother-in-law, Donald Martin; and sister-in-law, Janet Stichter.

Memorial gifts will go to Risen Christ Lutheran Church and the McCausland Volunteer Fire and Rescue.
