Gary Schreiber, age 86, of Wheatland, passed away on Aug. 9, 2023, at the Wheatland Manor Nursing Home. Visitation will be Aug. 19, at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Wheatland beginning at 9 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m., with Pastor Dianne Pritchard officiating.  Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery at a later date.

Gary was born to Clare and Evelyn Schreiber, and he married Barbara Stoltenberg in 1963 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Davenport.  He is survived by his wife Barb; sons Kirk of Wheatland, and Kevin (Cindy) of Bettendorf; sister in-law Pat (Darwin) Cannegieter; and brother in-law LeRoy (Alice) Stoltenberg.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Gary graduated from Marshalltown Community College, Iowa State Teacher’s College, and Colorado State College, where he earned his master’s degree. He taught industrial arts for a total of 37 years at Wheatland High School and Calamus-Wheatland High School. In 1963, Gary became the first driver’s education instructor in Wheatland and later taught it at Central High School in DeWitt. Gary was a former president of the Wheatland Lions Club, a Wheatland High School class sponsor, and a member of the Wheatland Athletic Boosters. He had many hobbies, to include model railroading, toy tractor pulls, an after-school slot car racing club for kids in Wheatland, and even built scale models for Ertl in Dyersville.

Every Friday night from 1966-1985, Gary ran a concession at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids and in 2009 was able to be a passenger for a few laps in a NASCAR stock car.  After retirement, he was a substitute teacher and had a craft side business with Barb. He was very proud of his ’49 Chevy that he rebuilt from the ground up. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ for over 50 years. Gary will be dearly missed by his wife, family, and friends.
