Serving as judges for the annual North Scott Junior High Spelling Bee were teachers Erin Burmahl, Amy Miers and Colin Ellis.
Upon completion of trying to spell the word "teflon," Alexa McDaniel looks hopefully at the judges. Unfortunately, she got it wrong.
Laura Azuela finished in a tie for seventh after missing the word "senile."
After starting with 21 competitors, the field at the North Scott Junior High Spelling Bee finally got whittled down to the final eight, and they conveyed various emotions moving forward. From left: Yorton Hagedorn (3rd), Alexa McDaniel (6th), Duncan Demarr (7th), Kalob James-Kroeger (5th), Gretchen Hoft (1st), Cameron Dobereiner (4th), Laura Azuela (7th) and Carter Dorr (2nd).
Duncan Demarr contemplates how to spell the word "solace." He finished tied for seventh.
With Gretchen Hoft looking on, Carter Dorr grimaces after misspelling the word "giddiness" in their final round head-to-head competition. Gretchen went on to correctly spell "curtail" and "positivity" for the win.
After finishing second a year ago at the school level, only to go on to win the North Scott Spelling Bee, eighth-grader Gretchen Hoft won this year's NSJH competition.

After spelling difficult words like diaphoresis, McIntosh and Giza, it all came down to "positivity" for North Scott eighth-grader Gretchen Hoft at last week's North Scott Junior High Spelling Bee. In the 20th round, she struggled with the word "array," but got it right. After Carter Dorr misspelled "giddiness," Gretchen had two more words to spell. She admits to having correctly guessed how to spell "curtail," but then confidently captured the win with "positivity." The top five finishers will advance to the district spelling bee next month, and Gretchen will advance to the regional Spelling Bee at Augustana. NSP photos by Scott Campbell.
