It’s been a challenging year for North Scott seniors, with many of the end-of-year activities and ceremonies being canceled as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Many members of the Class of 2020 were expected to be honored on Wednesday, May 13, at the annual Honors Assembly in the school auditorium, immediately followed by the presentation of scholarships awarded by the North Scott Educational Foundation and other generous community donors.

That didn’t happen. Today, The NSP is proud to announce, and recognize, the members of this year’s senior class who have been awarded scholarships to further their education.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, both past and present, the North Scott Educational Foundation awarded a record 89 scholarships for a total of $120,900.

Since its inception 34 years ago, the Foundation has now awarded 1,130 scholarships totaling more than $1.6 million.

This year, four new scholarships were also introduced.

The family of SJ Madden, who would have been a member of this year’s graduating class, endowed two $500 scholarships in his name. One was awarded to a graduate who has participated in at least one of the following: History Day, Lancer Productions, choir or band. The other was awarded to a student who has a GPA of at least 2.5

Tom and Joni Dittmer, along with their children, Ben and Addy, established the Grandview Farms Scholarships. Two $1,000 scholarships were awarded to seniors entering an agriculture-related career or trade.

The Robert and Lu Wiese family made a $16,000 contribution to the Foundation, and $1,000 in scholarships will be awarded each year for the next 16 years to students who have demonstrated an involvement in school and community activities.

The late Bob Wiese was a former city councilman, utility board member and fire chief in Eldridge, and was active in many civic organizations. Lu Wiese was a former coordinator of the North Scott Food Pantry, and currently resides at Grand Haven in Eldridge.

The other new scholarship was the $250 Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union Volleyball Sportsmanship Scholarship.

NSEF board members are: Debbie Shannon (president), Tracy Lindaman (vice president), Susan Blaskovich (secretary), Seth Porter (treasurer), Scott Campbell (scholarship chairman), Leah Allen, Chris Baldwin, Jay Johnson, Kathy Kilen, Butch Richlen, Judi Sarafin, Dr. Donald Sierk, Julie Stark, Jim Tank and Diana Vollbeer.
