PHOTO GALLERY: Faces from the past

Second-graders at Alan Shepard Elementary held a "wax museum" earlier this month, with students dressing as historical figures and giving reports to visitors to the Long Grove school.

"Our goal with this project was to integrate social studies, reading, writing, and public speaking!" said teacher Bridget Robbins. "Students spent time learning about many historical figures before choosing the person they wanted to research.  As they researched - notes were taken, speeches written, posters created, and finally, students practiced public speaking with expression and a bit of acting!

"Of equal importance, we wanted the students to discover, via their learning, that many of the historical figures faced obstacles in their lives," continued Robbins.  "As teachers, we hope that the students recognize that despite obstacles in a person's life, through perseverance, you can achieve great things and change the world for the better.

"We are so proud of the effort every second grade student put into making the museum a success."
