Obituary: Ronald McGill

Ronald L. McGill, 83, of Eldridge, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2024, at Fieldstone of DeWitt.

Visitation will be from 5–7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22, at Chambers Funeral Home, Eldridge. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday morning at the funeral home.  Burial with military honors will be at Rock Island National Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to the Humane Society of Scott County or to the Disabled American Veterans in Davenport. 

Ron was born Dec. 7, 1940, in Washington, Iowa, the son of William and Ruth (Kimmel) McGill.  Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Vietnam War.  Ron was honorably discharged in 1963 after four years of service to his country.  On May 28, 1965, he was united in marriage to Rose M. Baker in Rock Island.  Ron worked for Iowa Illinois Gas & Electric for nine years, and later as general utilities manager for the City of Eldridge for 29 years.  He was a member of the American Legion Post #639 and A.B.A.T.E. of Iowa – District 15.  He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson and had visited all 48 contiguous states with his brother, Bill, on their motorcycles.

Those left to honor his memory are his children, Lisa (Brad) Arnold of DeWitt, and Scott McGill of Davenport; nine grandchildren, Tiffany, Curtis, Stephen, Brittany, Alyssa, Luke, Nicholas, Nathaniel, and Samuel; eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Bill (Donna) McGill of Camanche, Patricia (Guy) Sons of Lost Nation, Barbara Spurrier of DeWitt, and Sue (Ron) King of Grand Mound; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rose in 2016; and sister, Marla McGlassen.
