In typical years, according to crop progress and condition reports from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, farmers have harvested about 10% of corn acres and 15% or more of soybean acres by the end of September. The latest USDA report, however, shows just 3% of soybean acres and 5% of corn acres have been harvested in Iowa.

Abby Boysen has accepted the position of regional director with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach serving Clinton, Muscatine and Scott counties. She begins the position Oct. 1. As regional director, she will provide administrative leadership to county extension office staff and guidance to county extension councils.

It can also be frustrating, coming out to find your vegetable patch decimated by an unwanted nighttime visitor. We will discuss both sides of this equation: ways to benefit wildlife through landscaping choices and ways to mitigate common wildlife conflicts close to home.

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Commercial Horticulture program will hold the 2026 High Tunnel Short Course at the Iowa Arboretum in Madrid, Iowa, on Nov. 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 pm. Commercial growers, as well as those interested in high tunnel production for fruit and vegetable crops, are invited to learn about high tunnel production, connect with fellow growers and explore the arboretum.

Republican signs on 210th Street were vandalized last Thursday evening. Sheriff Tim Lane told The NSP Monday that, while the department will follow up on any leads, political vandalism isn't unusual, especially in an election year. “It just kind of tells you what political environment we are in locally and nationally. People are very, very involved in the political atmosphere, and they’re willing to go to the extent of going on other people’s properties to destroy signs," Lane said.
