The American Legion Auxiliary sends girls that have completed their junior year in high school to Girls State each year. Girls State is an inspirational, educational, fun, and life-changing experience for young women. The program's objective is to develop leadership skills, confidence, and action-based understanding of the governmental process. The American Legion Auxiliary believes that educating youth about the basic ideals and principles of government will help ensure our democracy’s survival. This year the Walcott American Legion Auxiliary is proud to be sending three very strong young women.

Post Commander Ron Sebastian (left) and Post Quartermaster Brad Striegel (right) presented each winner with a cash award and a VFW certificate. North Scott Junior High School student Hayden Hythecker won $100 for her Patriot’s Pen student essay competition for grades 6-8. North Scott High School student Kelsie Hilsenbeck won $200 her Voice of Democracy student essay competition for grades 9-12.
