An investment in education represents a belief in plurality, in myriad talents and interests, in diversity in the old sense of the word. At least that seems to be the investment that Evelyn Schlunsen, the Princeton Presbyterian Church, and the NSEF have set out to make. Everyone deserves a lift.

Nov. 29, 2000: The Iowa Utilities Board created a “relief plan” for the 319 area code, because the code was running out of available phone numbers. This meant that half of the phone customers in eastern Iowa, including the Quad Cities, would adopt the 563 area code during the next year. Many people, including business and political leaders in the area, were disappointed by the news, arguing it would be inconvenient. The Quad City Development Group had lobbied for a 319 split that would have kept the Quad Cities, Iowa City and Cedar Rapids with the same area code.

Two weeks ago, I saw a great blue heron wading through a eutrophic pond at Buena Vista Park. Though I had gone out to take pictures of the autumn foliage, I found myself distracted and distraught with the film that stretched across the water, the color of arsenic.

I first visited Scott County in March, on a wet, gray day that no one could call beautiful. I got a tour of Eldridge and its neighboring towns from Scott Campbell, once the editor of this paper, who was eager to convince me I should take the job the Press had offered.

Nov. 3, 2010: Thirty years after the idea had first been proposed, a multi-purpose trail would be constructed to link Eldridge and Long Grove. The Bi-State Regional Commission approved the project for funding, with most of the money for the two-mile trail coming from a $825,682 Iowa Quad Cities Transportation Enhancement Program grant. The two towns would each contribute just under $93,000, and Scott County would provide the right-of-way and $20,000 in funding. Construction was expected to start in the summer of 2011.
