Obituary: Wendell Watts

A funeral service for Wendell Clay Watts, 96, of Davenport, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 8, in the Davenport Lutheran Home Chapel. The McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mr. Watts died Monday, Feb. 18, 2019.

Wendell Watts was born Dec. 27, 1922, in Badger, Iowa, the son of Frank and Minnie (Smith) Watts. He graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1941, and later earned a business degree from Drake University.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy Air Corps in 1942, and was called into service in 1943. He was a pilot and was stationed in the South Pacific, where he flew TBMs until the end of World War II.

He married Lois Thorson in June of 1948. She died in January of 1960. He married Zola Hacker in July of 1961. She died in March of 2012. He married Ruth Bahan in December of 2012. She died in February of 2017.

He worked in sales and management in Iowa City, Marshalltown, Cedar Rapids and Sioux City. He retired to Lake of the Ozarks in 1982 and later relocated to Davenport in 2006.

He was a lifelong Lutheran.

Survivors include his children, Cynthia Irwin, Davenport, Kristine (Keith) Roberson, Oklahoma City, and Bob (Maureen) Hacker, Omaha; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Edgerly (Pat) Watts, Cedar Rapids.

In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by two infant children; a granddaughter, Kim Hacker; a son-in-law, Arnie Irwin; and a brother, Ted Watts.
