Obituary: Jack Scott

A service of Christian Burial for Jack Scott, 82, of DeWitt, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27 (today), at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt. Visitation was Tuesday, Dec. 26, from 3-7 p.m. at the Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt.

Mr. Scott died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017, at Westwing Place, DeWitt.

Jackie Lee Scott was born Oct. 28, 1935, in Elwood, Iowa, the son of John and Martha (Schmidt) Scott. He was a 1953 graduate of Elwood High School. He graduated in 1960 from the University of Iowa with a bachelors degree in pharmacy.

On June 23, 1962, he married Verda Thomsen in Olin, Iowa, at St. John Lutheran Church.

Jack was a pharmacist briefly at the former Smith Drug in Davenport. In July of 1962, the couple purchased the former Thorpe Drug in DeWitt and continued to operate it as Scott Drug for 34 years until retirement in 1996.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, and its finance council. He was active in the Chamber of Commerce, Tower Stamp Company, Jaycees, and the Iowa Pharmacy Association, being nominated as honorary president for a year. He was a member of Springbrook Country Club for many years and former president.

His hobbies were golfing, fishing, hunting, dancing and traveling.

Surviving are his wife, Verda; sons, Mike (Kathy) Scott, DeWitt, and Jeff (Jodi) Scott, Lone Tree, Colo.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, LeRoy and Darlene Scott.
