Obituary: Edward Spengler

A funeral service for Edward Wallace “Eddie” Spengler Jr., 85, of New Liberty, was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Bentley Funeral Home, Durant. Visitation was from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Private family interment was in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Spengler died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019, at his home.

Edward Spengler was born May 13, 1933, in northwest Iowa, the son of Edward and Elsie (Moses) Spengler. He graduated from Bennett High School in 1951.

He married Marion Wriedt on Jan. 21, 1951, in Davenport. She died June 3, 2011.

He was a master machinist and head of Island maintenance at the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring in 1985.

He was a member of Peace United Church of Christ in Bennett and Deer Valley Collectors. He served as a town councilman, volunteer fireman, and head of sewer and water maintenance, and oversaw the installation of the sewer system in New Liberty.

His hobbies were playing softball, hunting, fishing, antique tractors, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his sons, Lon (Pam) Spengler and Randy (Donna) Spengler, all of New Liberty; his grandchildren, Kelli Spengler, Kristin (Jason) Dyer, Kaylon (Danielle) Spengler, Casey Spengler, and Rylan Spengler; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Collier, Walcott.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie Brumbaugh; two sisters; and two brothers.

Memorials may be made to Peace United Church of Christ or the New Liberty Volunteer Fire Department.
