Robert Barrett
Robert Lee Barrett, age 76, of Wilton, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 26 (today) at the United Methodist Church of Wilton. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at the church. Burial will take place in Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton. Memorials may be made to the family, which will be used to support the Wilton community. Bob was born on May 6, 1948, the son of James and Gladys (Myers) Barrett. He graduated from Colo High School in 1966. He went on to attend Marshalltown Junior College before earning his degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1973. After college, Bob began his career at Hawkeye Insurance Company. In 1975, he joined North Star Steel (later Gerdau), where he worked until his retirement in 2010. He was a devoted husband to Janet Hasche, whom he married in 1971, and together they built a life filled with love.
Bob’s passion for farming and gardening kept him busy, but his true love was for his family and friends. Dedicated to the City of Wilton for 40 years, serving on City Council and as a past mayor. Even after retiring from city office in 2022, Bob remained engaged, always eager to discuss city affairs with current members. Bob was an active member of the United Methodist Church, serving on numerous committees throughout the years. His commitment to both his community and church was a reflection of his generous spirit.
Bob will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 53 years, Jan; three children, Tim (Deanna) Barrett, Trent (Holly) Barrett, both of Wilton, and Taryn (Dennis) Keppy of Blue Grass; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Barb Carlson of Story City and Becky (Larry) Cobb of Waukee.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Dorothy Barrett.
