Durant & Wilton schools make cancer-fighting donations
The Durant football cheerleaders, under the direction of Cheryl Prohaska, raised funds during a "Cheer for the Cure" night at a Durant home football game last fall. The Durant cheer squad has been holding annual fundraisers for the Susan G. Komen Foundation Quad Cities chapter. A check for $5,000 was donated to Susan G. Komen earlier this year, bringing the grand total to $25,000 donated from Durant High School. On Monday, May 14, the Wilton National Honor Society and members of the varsity volleyball team took a trip to Muscatine Radiology to participate in donating a check for $1,000 to help Muscatine area patients who are in financial need and cannot afford to pay for mammograms and cancer screenings. To help the donation go further, Muscatine Radiology matched the Wilton donation for a total of $2,000. The total will provide 10 life-saving screenings for patients who are in financial need. "The Muscatine area has a very high percentage of stage 4 breast cancer patients. This is in part due to patients not being screened in the early stages of cancer because of financial struggles," said Wilton teacher Tim Bean, representing the Wilton NHS students.
