The West Liberty softball team completed their busy week with four wins and a loss as they head toward the end of the regular season.

The Comets grabbed victories over Mid-Prairie, Davenport West and Washington, while falling to Iowa City Regina.

The Comets improve to 15-6 on the season after the week of play.

On Monday, the Comets hosted Mid-Prairie for a doubleheader to end the season series.

In the first game, both teams scored in the first inning before the Comets added three more in the bottom of the second.

The Golden Hawks plated one in response before the defenses locked in and held each other scoreless for the remainder of the contests as the Comets left game one with a 4-2 victory.

Game two saw the Comet offense break through, scoring two in the first and three in the second to grab an early 5-1 victory.

Going on to score two in the third, three in the fifth and two in the sixth, the Comets cruised to a 12-2 mercy rule victory in the second game of the day.

Thursday saw a visit from Iowa City Regina. The Comets looked to claim a big win before heading to the last few games of the month.

All seemed to be going to plan in the first inning as the Comets grabbed a two-run lead in the bottom of the second.

One run in response from the Regals saw the Comets lead cut in half before the Regals scored three in the third.

The Regals continued to add to their lead as the Comets bats stagnated, ultimately ending in a 10-2 Comet defeat.

On Saturday, the Comets headed to Washington for their penultimate tournament of the season — the Eddie Jones Memorial Invitational.

Facing off first against Class 5A Davenport West, both teams managed a run in the first inning.

The diamond was quiet for the next three and a half innings before the Comets jumped back into the run column, scoring three in the bottom of the fifth.

The Falcons fought valiantly, scoring one in the sixth, but it proved not enough to overcome the deficit, the Comets captured a 3-2 victory in their first game of the day.

The second matchup saw the Comets face off against hosts Washington. Neither team managed to score until the top of the fifth inning, when the Comets scored four runs before Washington responded with one of their own.

Both teams managed an additional run in the sixth as the Comets held off the Demons to end their day with a 5-2 victory.

The Comets look ahead Thursday against West Branch before a two-day event at the University of Iowa Softball complex that will see the Comets play four games.

Additionally, the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union released its regional draw on Wednesday. A full breakdown of the Comets’ path to the state tournament will be in next week’s story.
