Terry J. Benton, age 69, of Durant, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 18, at Bentley Funeral Home, Durant, with a time of sharing being held at approximately 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Terry was born on Jan. 7, 1955, the son of Larry and Ruth (Lawson) Benton in Greenfield, Iowa. He graduated from Greenfield High School with the Class of 1973. Terry married Lynne Cole on April 23, 1988, in Las Vegas, Nev. Lynne passed away on Oct. 8, 2021.
Terry began his career as an Agent Operator for the Rock Island Railroad and later joined the maintenance crew with the Rock Island Rail Lane. In 1978, he relocated to New York for a railroad project before returning home. Back in the Midwest, he continued his work in the railroad industry with various contractors until his retirement in 2021. His dedication extended to the broader railroad community, where he served on the board of directors for the National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association for 13 years, from 2001 to 2014.
Terry enjoyed nature and outdoor activities. He loved tending to his garden and flower beds and loved fishing, especially for catfish. Terry was known for his generous heart and love for his family and friends.
Terry will be lovingly remembered by two children, Tyler (Kasey) Benton of Cedar Rapids and Brittney (Dennis) Ingles of Durant; two grandchildren, Tony and Ivy Mesa; one brother, Doug (Margarita) Vorrath of Dennison, Iowa; and one sister, Gloria (Jeff) Martin of Fontanelle, Iowa.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Lynne.
