Steve was born on Feb. 21, 1949, the son of Calvin and Dorothy (Lahl) Thiering, in Davenport.  He graduated from Davenport Central High School with the Class of 1967. After graduation, Steve proudly served his country in the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Observer (MSO-461) and the Navy Ceremonial Guard from 1967-1970.  Steve married Diane Minnaert on Oct. 6, 1973, at St. John’s United Methodist Church, Davenport.

Steve owned and operated Thiering Construction from 1973 to 1985, building a reputation for quality craftsmanship. After selling his company, he continued his career at Grunder Construction in Wilton, where he worked from 1985 to 2007. In 2007, Steve joined Eller Construction in Eldridge, where he served until his retirement in 2021.

Steve was also a devoted member of Calvary Church in Muscatine, where he was active on the church leadership board and their men’s bible study groups. His faith was a constant source of strength and purpose. Steve’s life wasn’t just about work and service — it was also filled with joy and adventure. He embraced the thrill of snowmobiling, carving paths through fresh snow.  At home, he was blessed with great neighbors and found happiness working in the yard alongside his wife, Diane, creating a beautiful landscape.  But more than anything, Steve loved his family. Steve’s warmth, humor, and steady presence were a constant source of love and strength.

Steve will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Diane; three children, Robbie (Silvia) Minnaert, Becki (Jim) Morris, and Jamie (Sharon Kleinow) Minnaert; eight grandchildren, Ansley (Chris) Philby, Morgan (Justin) Timmerman, Austin Thiering, Isabel (Michael) Becker, Bailey Morris, Ava (Rylan) Coons, Elizabeth Minnaert, and Amelia Thiering; five great-grandchildren, Calvin, Griffin, Jayce, Kori, and Hazel; and one sister-in-law, Margie Thiering.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Koy; and one brother, Ronald Thiering.
