Lu was born on Jan. 18, 1929, the daughter of Otto and Adelia (Hering) Schlapkohl in Davenport. She graduated from Durant High School and earned her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls. Lu married Marlan “Mike” Schreck on June 18, 1950, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Davenport. Mike passed away on Dec. 6, 2006.
Lu embarked on her teaching career at Prospect Hill Country School, a quaint one-room schoolhouse situated on the family Century Farm in rural Durant. She was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Durant, where she was a mentor in faith and taught Sunday school. Lu was an active member of the Durant American Legion Auxiliary and was a Durant Lioness. In addition to her community involvement, she participated in several mission trips to Africa and always looked forward to the annual Durant Polka Fest. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, crossword puzzles, reading and gardening. Most of all, Lu loved being a caregiver to her family and visiting with her friends.
Lu will be dearly missed by her four children, Lonnie Schreck of Edmond, Okla., Dr. Micheal (Susan) Schreck of Long Grove, Jane Schreck of Jacksonville, Fla., and Carrie (Greg) Paustian of Dixon; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Lu was preceded in death by her husband, Marlan “Mike”; one son, Kurt; two brothers, Lester Schlapkohl and Willis Schlapkohl; and two sisters, Mildred Schlapkohl and Dorothy Paulsen.
