Obituary: Curtis Norby

Curtis Glen Norby, 71, of Durant, Iowa, died Sunday, June 27, 2021 at Select Specialty Hospital, Davenport, as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on June 4, 2021.

A memorial gathering will be held from 9 to 11 a.m., Saturday, July 3 at Bentley Funeral Home, Durant. A memorial service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday at the funeral home. A Celebration of Life and luncheon will be held immediately following the service at the Durant American Legion. Memorials may be made to the family. Curt was born on July 16, 1949, the son of Glen Norby and Elaine Amunson in Ute, Iowa. He grew up and attended school in Soldier, Iowa. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Curt worked various jobs, until finding his passion as a towboat captain with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, retiring in July of 2014 with more than 30 years of service.

He was a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion. Curt enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, especially with his grandson, Tyler. Most of all, Curt cherished spending time with all of his grandchildren.

Curt will be dearly missed by his wife, Birdie of Durant; three children, DJ (Erin) Norby of Wilton, Curt (Monica Jessen) Norby of Sioux City, and Billie Norby of Lone Tree; five grandchildren, Tyler, Sky, Dillan, Ethan and Eli; his twin sisters, Kaye Mauch of Castana, and Gaye (Mike “Patch”) Smeal of Snyder, Nebraska; and his brother in-law, Charles Hinrickson of Castana.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Peggy Hinrickson and Nora Jane Parr; and two brothers in-law, Jack Parr and Whitey Mauch.
