Calvin E. Harmsen, 78, of Bettendorf, passed away Saturday, November 11, 2023 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023 from 11:00am-1:00pm at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow the visitation at National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project or Tunnel to Towers (T2T.org).
Calvin was born on April 22, 1945 in Iowa, a son of Alvin and Grace (Daufeldt) Harmsen. He was united in marriage to Patricia Morrissey on June 19, 1971.
Calvin grew up on a farm and later was a Marine Veteran having served during Vietnam. He graduated from the University of Iowa with his Masters degree. In his younger years he loved baseball and was very active coaching and umpiring. He was a big fan of sports, especially Iowa Wrestling. Calvin had been the CFO of Mel Foster from June 1, 1978 until June 30, 2010. He had also been the Treasurer of the East Pony League for several years. Later in life he developed a love for Harley Davidson Motorcycles and riding with friends. After his retirement he spent 12 years in Texas with his wife where they loved to play tennis and golf. Calvin was also a master gardener and enjoyed his hummingbirds. Above all else he loved his grandchildren and cherished the time he spent with them.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Patti; children Amy (Sid) Boecker and Chris (Kasi) Harmsen; grandchildren Austin and Samantha Decker, and Ty and Mia Harmsen; and siblings Rich (Marge) Harmsen and Betty Ann (Tyrone Parker) Harmsen.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Deanna, Bob and Gary (Betty) Harmsen.
