Chair of the Community Foundation of Cedar County (CFCC) Dawn Smith presented recipients certificates of grant approval for the 2018 Grant Award Cycle at the Cedar County Courthouse basement on Wednesday, April 25. Recipients included: city of Durant for Cedar County radios; city of Durant for a Community Center modernization project; Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Durant for Family Movie Night in the Park; Inland Firefighters, Inc. for personal protective equipment in Bennett; Bennett Public Library for an afterschool/summer program and launchpads; Bennett Community School for the purchase of an automated external defibrillator (AED); Lutheran Services in Iowa Healthy Families America program for a new parent program in Cedar County; and Rape Victim Advocacy Program for sexual violence prevention in Cedar County. In total, the CFCC awarded $103,430 in funding for area organizations.

The Wilton American Legion Post #584 has a new drop box for retired flags. Located at the Legion building (215 Cherry Street), flags can be dropped off in order to be retired properly. Old flags can also be dropped off at City Hall or the Convenience Center. The Legion will host a flag retirement ceremony June 9.

The Wilton Chamber of Commerce held its first weekly farmer’s market in Elder Park on Thursday, May 31. Dozens of visitors enjoyed music, food, shopping and kids' activities provided by the Boy Scouts, 4-H club, Muscatine County Extension, Girl Scouts and the Wilton Fine Arts Guild. The Durant football cheerleaders, under the direction of Cheryl Prohaska, raised funds during a "Cheer for the Cure" night at a Durant home football game last fall. The Durant cheer squad has been holding annual fundraisers for the Susan G. Komen Foundation Quad Cities chapter. A check for $5,000 was donated to Susan G. Komen earlier this year, bringing the grand total to $25,000 donated from Durant High School. The children sang their favorite songs, walked to pomp and circumstance, and celebrated with a reception afterward. DuPont Pioneer recently awarded Wilton High School with a $4,800 grant to support their local CASE initiatives. CASE is the Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education in the schools. Since 2013 DuPont Pioneer has been providing grants to schools across the country to provide Agriscience educators with training and classrooms resources to implement CASE in their schools to better prepare students for future careers in agriculture and science. In 1948, 29 students graduated from Durant High School. Four former students held a 70-year class reunion at the Wilton Retirement Community on Wednesday, May 16. Shown standing (from left) are Lois (Martens) Wirth and Dorothy (Wegener) Gibson; seated are Robert Schlapkohl and Alvin “Al” Korthaus. The class members held a luncheon and invited the spouses of other late class members. Other members of the class of 1948 who were unable to attend the reunion include Frances Paul of Durant, Elaine Martz of Branson, Missouri and Marilyn (McKillip) Barker of Council Bluffs.

Wilton Retirement Community celebrated National Nurses Week with a breakfast party on Friday, May 11 as recognition for their hard work and dedication. The nurses enjoyed a delicious breakfast followed by “Nurse Bingo” with prizes. Each was honored with a monetary gift and gift bag.
