The Durant football cheerleaders, under the direction of Cheryl Prohaska, raised funds during a "Cheer for the Cure" night at a Durant home football game last fall. The Durant cheer squad has been holding annual fundraisers for the Susan G. Komen Foundation Quad Cities chapter. A check for $5,000 was donated to Susan G. Komen earlier this year, bringing the grand total to $25,000 donated from Durant High School. On Wednesday, May 16, family and friends watched 16 children receive their diploma from Wilton’s Zion Lutheran preschool. The children sang their favorite songs, walked to pomp and circumstance, and celebrated with a reception afterward. DuPont Pioneer recently awarded Wilton High School with a $4,800 grant to support their local CASE initiatives. CASE is the Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education in the schools. Since 2013 DuPont Pioneer has been providing grants to schools across the country to provide Agriscience educators with training and classrooms resources to implement CASE in their schools to better prepare students for future careers in agriculture and science. In 1948, 29 students graduated from Durant High School. Four former students held a 70-year class reunion at the Wilton Retirement Community on Wednesday, May 16. Shown standing (from left) are Lois (Martens) Wirth and Dorothy (Wegener) Gibson; seated are Robert Schlapkohl and Alvin “Al” Korthaus. The class members held a luncheon and invited the spouses of other late class members. Other members of the class of 1948 who were unable to attend the reunion include Frances Paul of Durant, Elaine Martz of Branson, Missouri and Marilyn (McKillip) Barker of Council Bluffs.

Wilton Retirement Community celebrated National Nurses Week with a breakfast party on Friday, May 11 as recognition for their hard work and dedication. The nurses enjoyed a delicious breakfast followed by “Nurse Bingo” with prizes. Each was honored with a monetary gift and gift bag. The new Durant water tower remains on-schedule as crews were on site painting the structure last week. According to city clerk Deana Cavin, there are still items that need to be completed before the August deadline, which include testing for bacteria and utility work. Cavin said the additional tower would add another 255,000 gallons of elevated water storage, doubling the current reserves that only offer the town about a day's worth of water during emergencies. While the extra tower will help with stored water, Cavin also hoped it would help with water pressure on the north side of town and be able to service the new and existing sub-divisions in the area.

Wilton Mayor Bob Barrett (right) receives a memorial poppy from auxiliary member Becky Hansen (left). Poppies will be distributed, in exchange for donations, to area businesses by members of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #584. The poppies will also be available during Smorgasbord on May 15. Money collected will go to assist veterans and their families. Veterans make each 9-piece poppy.

Members of Walcott American Legion Post 548 look on as flames consume old American flags. The flags were destroyed following a recent ceremony at the Walcott landfill. According to the U.S. Flag Code, when a flag’s condition has deteriorated to the point that it is no longer of fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. The Walcott Legion accepts discarded flags all year and destroys them periodically.

The United Methodist Church of Wilton, 1401 Maurer Street, will be celebrating Rural Life Sunday on May 6. Speakers at the 10:15 a.m. worship that day will be Bill and Jane Block, Larry and Karen Marine and Jack and Barb Schmoll, who will share the volunteer work they do throughout the United States as part of the organization, NOMADS. Worship will be followed by a hog roast and potluck. In addition, a silent auction will go on throughout the morning followed by a live auction. All proceeds benefit the church’s missions team. All area residents are welcome. Questions may be directed to the church office at 563-732-2084.
