Obituary: Wanda Stender

Wanda Kathleen Stender, age 98, of Walcott, passed away Friday, May 19, 2023, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf. A funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday, May 24 (today), at Bentley Funeral Home, Durant.  A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. - 12 noon prior to the service at the funeral home.  Private family burial will take place in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Walcott Fire Department, Durant Ambulance, or Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.  Online condolences may be left at www.bentleyfuneralhome.com.

Wanda was born in Eldridge on Nov. 12, 1924, the daughter of Gustav and Hilda (Bell) Glunz.  Wanda attended a one-room schoolhouse in Eldridge and was a 1942 graduate from Davenport High School.  Wanda graduated from beauty school in Davenport and worked at Petersen Harned Von Maur salon, forming lifelong friendships.  Wanda met Stan at a dance, and it was love at first sight. They married in June of 1945, raising five sons, and farmed in rural Walcott.

Wanda was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and attended Calvary United Methodist Church in Walcott.  She enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing cards, board games and was an avid reader.  Most of all, Wanda loved spending time with her family who meant the world to her.

Wanda will be dearly missed by her four sons, Douglas (Diane) Stender, Michael (Debbie) Stender, Loren (Kitty) Stender, and Greg (Robyn) Stender;  one daughter-in-law, Rita Stender; eight grandchildren, Kara Weems, Kelly (Penn) Vanstory, Candace (Eric) Everts, Christian (Jo Ellen) Stender, Cary (Jacqueline) Stender, Craig (Devona) Stender, Stewart (Andrea) Stender, and Danielle (Lowell) Wright; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Wanda was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley; one son, Steven Stender; one sister, Carma Hendricks; and one brother, Harvey Glunz.
