Sharon Lee Martens, 78, passed away on May 25, 2024, at Fieldstone of DeWitt Senior Living. Per her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and her final resting place will be at Rock Island National Cemetery. A private committal service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Scott County Library System.
Sharon was born June 27, 1945, in Davenport to Earl and Mildred (Stevens) McMaines. She graduated from Davenport West High in 1963 and shortly after, met the love of her life, Mike Martens. They got married on April 21, 1966, at the Augustana Seminary Chapel and went on to enjoy 58 more years in each other’s company.
For many years Sharon was the library aide at Neil Armstrong Elementary School in Park View and retired in June of 2000. As a passion, she loved reading books, especially to the children of Neil Armstrong Elementary, which she continued to do for many years after her retirement. She especially enjoyed instilling a love of reading in others. In her spare time, she also enjoyed going to Broadway Theater League productions with her friends and joining them for monthly dinners and coffees. She was famous for her grand sense of humor and being a great listener. She was a confidant to many.
Those left to honor Sharon’s memory include her loving husband, Mike; children, Jeff (Diane) Martens of Eldridge, and Lori (David) Martenson of Grand Haven, Mich.; four grandchildren; and one sister, Jacqueline Sanford of Germantown, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Patricia Schneckloth.
