Obituary: Robert Sutton

Robert H. Sutton, 79, of Eldridge, and formerly of Moline, died on Friday, Jan. 13, 2023, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, at Chambers Funeral Home in Eldridge.  Burial with military honors will follow at Mt. Joy Cemetery in Park View.  Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, the Iowa City Cancer Center or the March of Dimes.

He was born in Manchester on May 14, 1943, the son of Ivan and Alta (Holmes) Sutton and was a 1963 graduate of Moline High School.  In 1971, Robert married Karen Taylor in Rock Island.  He later married Linda Bennett on May 19, 2005, in Davenport.  She preceded him in death on June 21, 2011.

He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and was honorably discharged in 1970.

Robert was employed as a robotic welder for John Deere-Davenport Works, retiring in 2007 after 30 years of employment, and was a loyal member of the UAW, Local 281.

He was a devoted husband, dad and grandpa who loved woodworking and taking care of his beautiful flowers.

Those left to honor his memory include his children, Dewayne (Sherri Harding) Sutton of Moline, Tricia Vargas of Port Byron, Ill., and Bobby (Shelly) Sutton Jr. of Port Byron; his grandchildren, Lexi, Taylar, A.J., Katie, Breann and Ashley; his sister, Pauline Walton of Independence; and his special lady friend, Nancy.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Amber; his sisters, Melissa and Edna; and his brothers, Dwayne and Roger.
