Obituary: Richard Swanson

Richard “Dick” Swanson, 82, of Iowa Falls, formerly of Eldridge, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021, at Rehabilitation of Hampton surrounded by his family. A Memorial Service was held at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 8, at Weerts Funeral Home in Davenport, (3625 Jersey Ridge Road Davenport). Visitation took place an hour before the service, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., also at Weerts Funeral Home. Inurnment followed at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Dick was born Sept. 17, 1939, in Davenport, son of William and Annetta (Bernauer) Swanson.  He married Judy Simkins on Jan. 9, 1963, in Rock Island. Dick was very proud of his many accomplishments, working as a guard at International Harvester for 30+ years.  One of his proudest moments while working was riding in an ambulance that crashed and he shielded the patient from all the glass while personally sustaining a broken leg. He was a volunteer firefighter and one of the first EMTs on the Eldridge Fire Department. Dick proudly served his country in the U.S Navy from 1961 to 1966. During his free time, he loved to go fishing, travel to Florida for the winter, and had a great love for coaching little league baseball/softball in Eldridge for over a decade.  He was very proud of his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids.

Dick will be missed by his children: Richard Swanson II of Arizona, Kris (Tim) Hermsen of Iowa Falls, and Jason (Kelly) Swanson of Otsego, Minn.; grandchildren: Kelsey (Adam) Shortley, Travis Hermsen, Tyler Hermsen, Calvin Swanson and Lucie Swanson; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Pat Ranes. He was preceeded in death by his wife, Judy; his parents; and a brother, William Swanson.
