A time to gather and celebrate the life of Matthew J. Dittmer, 64, of Eldridge, will be held from 4 until 6 p.m. Thursday, April 8, at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, downtown Davenport. There will be a time of prayer and sharing held at 6 p.m.

Matt died peacefully Saturday, April 3, 2021, surrounded by his family.

Matthew Joseph Dittmer was born on Nov. 26, 1956, in Davenport, a son of William and Marilyn (Mohr) Dittmer.  He was united in marriage to Mary E. Verdon on Oct. 7, 1989, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Davenport.

Matt began working at his family’s service station, Dittmer’s Service Station, as a young man and owned and operated it alongside his brothers, Marty and Scott, since 1988.

Family was everything to Matt. He wanted nothing more than to get married and have children, and then was blessed even more with grandchildren.  He cherished the opportunity to coach and cheer on his children, Billy and Allie, in all of their activities, and was an adoring grandpa to Tess, Cole, and Knox. His children and grandchildren will forever be his pride and joy.

Matt loved visiting with family members and such visits made Sundays, and holidays extra special. Matt was a great cook and the family always enjoyed whatever he prepared for them. Saturdays and Sundays eventually became a special time for long truck rides with Mary.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, Eldridge; children: William (Kara) Dittmer, DeWitt, and Allie (Phil Thony) Dittmer, Dickeyville, Wis.; grandchildren Tess, Cole, and Knox; siblings: Linda (Rod) Speer, Marty (Jeri) Dittmer, and Scott (Pam) Dittmer, all of Davenport, and many nieces and nephews.

Matt was preceded in death by his parents and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Elaine and Vince Verdon.  May they rest in peace.

The Dittmer family would like to thank Matt’s sister-in-law Sandy for her years of loving support that she gave to Matt.  She was on the top of his list!

Memorials may be made to the ALS Association (in loving memory of his family member, June Rochholz.)
