Obituary: Charles Long

Charles Allen Long, 78 of Mt. Ayr, Iowa, passed away on Dec. 1, 2020, surrounded by his family.  Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.  A celebration of life will be held at a later date.  Memorials may be left to the family.  Online condolences may be left at www.Cunnick-Collins.com.

Charles was born on Sept. 22, 1942, in Shannon City, Iowa, to Allen and Bernice (Bastow) Long.  He was united in marriage to Helen Swanson on Sept. 26, 1970, in Omaha, Neb.

Charles was a man of many work hats.  He sheared sheep all over the United States.  He owned and operated his own heating and air conditioning company.  He raised purebred show sheep.  Charles was the Superintendent of the MVF 4H and open class sheep show.  In later years he grew thousands of tomatoes, and donated them. He was a member of Wishard Chapel Church in Mt. Ayr.  He was a fixer of many things.  He was a family man, and will be missed.

Survivors include his wife Helen, children Mike (Kelly) Long from Land-o- Lakes, Fla.; Pam (Terry) Sullivan of London, Derry, N.H.; Eric (Kathy) Long of Davenport; Allen Long, and Jeanine Hernandez of Donahue; and Cheryl Long-Diercks of Wheatland. Grandchildren, Savanah, Amber, Shawn, Kealsey, Eric, Brandon, Blake, Brady, and Blaine. Five great-grandchildren, along with many special nieces and nephews.  Sisters, Coleen (Wayne) Pickens, and Becky Cook.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother Ed, sister-in-law Margaret, one cousin Elton (Maria) Long, in-laws Shorty and Mary Lou Swanson.
