Obituary: Betty Speth

Funeral services celebrating the life of Betty Speth, 92, of Davenport, will be held at noon on Friday, Jan. 31, at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will follow in Maysville Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services.  Memorials may be made to Hills and Dales in Dubuque.

Ms. Speth passed away Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, at Jackson Ridge Healthcare Center, Maquoketa.

Betty Elaine Gronewold was born Dec. 6, 1932, in Donahue, a daughter of William and Irma (Marxsen) Gronewold.  She was united in marriage to Kenneth Speth in 1954.

She was a homemaker, a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, and in earlier years the Johnson School PTA, and a Cub Scout Leader.

Betty was talented at cross-stitching, making blankets for all her children and grandchildren.  She enjoyed puzzles and traveling to visit her family, especially her grandchildren.  She also loved ballroom dancing and fishing.

Those left to honor her memory include her sons Bill (Cathy) Speth of Altoona, Randy (Jolene) Speth of Long Grove; daughter Debbie Weidner of Davenport; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Ray Loussaert; 12 nephews; and six nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Elton Gronewold, and sister Shirley Loussaert.
