Max Birtell to be honored at 85th birthday reception

Max Birtell will celebrate his 85th birthday with a cake and ice cream reception hosted by his children on Oct. 9. The theme of the party is “Faithful and Blessed.” All friends and relatives are invited to call from 2-4 p.m. in the party room at Happy Joe’s in Eldridge. No gifts, please.

Max Birtell was born Oct. 11, 1936, in rural Auburn, Kan. He and his wife Judy were married Dec. 22, 1963, in Auburn. She passed away in 2018.

Mr. Birtell taught math at North Scott Junior High from 1969-1998.

He is a very active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bettendorf and the Eldridge Fitness Center. He also enjoys gardening (especially tomatoes).

His children are Emily (Joe) Gardyasz of Ankeny, the Rev. Brad (Christie) Birtell of rural Columbus, Neb., the Rev. Kenton (Linda) Birtell of Holdredge, Neb., Clayton (Sara) Birtell of Peoria, Ariz., Amy (Dave) Assmann of Hingham, Wis., and Jenny (Dr. Kyle) Beery of Frederick, Md.

His grandchildren are Porter (Hillary) Birtell of Sioux Falls, S.D., Britney (Scott) Veracruysse of Sioux Falls, Sawyer (Melanie) Birtell of Spring Park, Minn., Abby Gardyasz of Orange City, Grace Gardyasz of Ankeny, Hannah (Kyle) McLaughlin of Gretna, Neb., Nathan Birtell of Seward, Neb., Parker, Kaitlyn and Sydney Birtell of Peoria, Ariz., Katherine Birtell of Milwaukee, Wis., Eva Birtell of Newark, Del., Noah Birtell of Sheboygan, Wis., Naomi and Elijah Birtell of Hingham, Wis., Tony, Ellie and Alex Assmann of Hingham, and Jonathan Beery of Frederick, Md. He has two great-grandchildren, Mabel and Beau Veracruysse.
