Paul and Susan Kalainoff of Eldridge will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 2.

Paul Nick Kalainoff and Susan Mae Wente were married at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Denver, Iowa, at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2, 1972 (Labor Day weekend). A reception was held in the church basement. Both were students at UNI and chose to reside in a small apartment in Cedar Falls, later moving into their first home close to campus to finish their college educations. Paul was employed by John Deere for 13 years, and Susan became a medical technologist and continued working at the hospital laboratory in Waterloo. The couple moved to Davenport in 1987, when Paul became manager of the newly built Bonanza Restaurant there. Susan continued working in the laboratory at Genesis Medical Center for 24 years, and retired from Medical Arts Associates in January of 2021. Paul has been working as a self-employed contractor for the past several years and is now semi-retired.

Paul and Susan together have enjoyed many years of road racing, backpacking in Colorado with their boys, biking RAGBRAI, and traveling foreign countries. They decided to celebrate their anniversary this year by taking their children and grandchildren on a family vacation in Hawaii early in July of this year. The two weeks were truly an adventure and a wonderful trip for all to cherish.

Their children are Nick Kalainoff (Cheyanne Glover), with grandchildren Cora and Evan of Portland, Ore., and Eric Kalainoff (Tina Plett), with grandchildren Luciana and Elena of Long Grove, and Michael Ray of Eldridge.
