Harmsens to note 49th anniversary

Richard and Marjorie Harmsen of Durant will celebrate their 49th wedding anniversary Feb. 20.

Marjorie Huber and Richard Harmsen were married Feb. 20, 1971 at Our Lady of Victory Church in Davenport.

Richard retired from Caterpillar Inc. After retiring, he served as Mayor of Durant. His passion is baseball and he received his national coaching certificate at the age of 74. He has always umpired and coached baseball all his life. Some of his notable accomplishments were: He was scouted to the Oakland A’s as a catcher. He holds a coaching certificate, and umpire certification for ASA softball and men’s fast pitch. He is in process of finishing a baseball book. Out of high school, he proudly served in the Marine Corps, enlisting as a jet engine mechanic, later serving in Vietnam.

Marjorie graduated from AIC Business School. After school she worked for the Quad-City Times. She then became a deputy sheriff under Woody Harmsen, retiring from Scott County Courthouse after a 10-year stint. When her girls were in school, she took jobs at Durant school, worked as a CNA at assisted care facilities, and sorted corn for Pioneer Seed Co. One of her biggest accomplishments was as an AKC dog breeder, reputable for breeding registered German-lineage German Shepherds and English Cream Golden Retrievers for more than 40 years. At the age of 53, she went back to college, completing her CNA certification and nursing with straight A’s.

They are the parents of Denise Harmsen (Rick Makoben), Tammy Harmsen (Rich Loeffler), Heather Harmsen, and Franceen (Jake) Graham. They have three grand-children, Jacob Conley, Aira Mae, and Zoey Athena-Marie.
