Obituary: Vernon Keller

A funeral service celebrating the life of Vernon E. Keller, 85, of Davenport, was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Christ United Methodist Church, Davenport. Burial was in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation was one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. The Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, assisted the family with arrangements.

Mr. Keller died Friday, Nov. 30, 2018, at Genesis East Medical Center, Davenport.

Vernon Keller was born Nov. 1, 1933, in Knox City, Mo., the son of Robert and Gladys (Walker) Keller. He graduated from Granger High School and from Truman State University with a bachelor of science and master of arts degree. He also attended Kansas State University, working on postgraduate studies.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1955, stationed in Japan as a radar technician.

He married Hazel Elder on Aug. 8, 1953, at the Christian Church in Greensburg, Mo.

He retired from Oscar Mayer (Kraft) Foods in 1992 after 22 years of service. He held management positions in training, safety, and protective services. He was training manager of the Bendix plant in Davenport, and a mathematics teacher in Davenport, Monroe, and Exira, Iowa.

He held memberships in the national and local training and safety organizations and served on the Iowa Governor’s Safety Council. He was the first president of the Park View Homeowner’s Association.

Survivors include his wife; his sons, Larry (Teresa) Keller, Davenport, Gary (Kristi) Keller, Donnellson, Iowa, Paul (Tom) Keller, Graham, N.C., and Greg (Angie) Keller, Stockton; a daughter/granddaughter, Kaitlyn (Joshua) Swaim, North Liberty; his grandchildren, Colleen (Rob) Brown and Gavin (Beth) Keller; 10 great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Kenneth (Margaret) Keller, Robert Keller, Dale (Loes) Keller, Jerry Keller, and Roberta Keller.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald, and a grandson, Adam.

Memorials may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, the American Heart Association, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
