Obituary: Robert Haack

A funeral service for Robert James Haack, 92, of Davenport, was held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Zion Lutheran Church, Davenport. Visitation was from noon until the time of the service on Friday at the church. The Runge Mortuary, Davenport, assisted the family with arrangements.

Mr. Haack died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, at Genesis East Medical Center, Davenport.

Robert Haack was born Sept. 16, 1926, in Grundy County, Iowa, the son of Burdette and Thelma (Hersey) Haack. He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1944. He graduated from Cornell College in 1951 with majors in history and political science. Later, he attended law school at The University of Iowa, and received his Juris Doctorate degree in 1955.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

He married Jeanne Hayes on Nov. 12, 1950. She died in 2003.

He practiced law with Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company in Davenport for 31 years, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church for over 60 years; was an institutional representative for the Boy Scouts; was active in the Republican Party, serving as precinct committeeman and ward captain; served as director of the Gas and Electric Company Credit Union; and served on the board of the Handicapped Development Center for 25 years.

His hobbies were golfing, fishing, and traveling.

Survivors include his sons, Joel (Linda) Haack, Cedar Falls, Jon Haack, Elkader, and Jeffrey Haack, Davenport; a daughter-in-law, JoAnn Haack, Iowa City; his granddaughter, Jennifer (Kevin) Olson; two great-granddaughters; a sister, Berdyne Escher; and a brother, Donald (Bonnie) Haack.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, James, in 2016; a sister, Hilda; and a brother, Eugene.

Memorials may be made to the Handicapped Development Center, Zion Lutheran Church, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
