Obituary: Kathryn Holst

A private funeral service will be held for Kathryn “Katie” Holst, 102, of Bettendorf. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. The McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mrs. Holst died Monday, Dec. 9, 2019, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.

Kathryn Dubil was born June 24, 1917, at home in Bettendorf, the daughter of Charles and Katherine (Bednick) Dubil. She attended Bettendorf Schools and later attended Hunter College in New York.

She served in the U.S. Navy for 2½ years during World War II, at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC, developing war photos for the Pentagon.

She married Alvin Holst on Oct. 26, 1945, at a military chapel in Forestville, Md. He died Feb. 28, 2007.

In early years, she worked at State Furniture in downtown Bettendorf. Later, she was a farm wife. She and her husband operated a dairy and hog farm in rural Bettendorf.

She was a charter member of Women in Military Service for America. With her husband, she was a member of the Third Armored Spearhead Association, and the Disabled Veterans Auxiliary, the American Legion, and the Farm Bureau.

Survivors include her daughter, Sue (Bill) Slavens, Bettendorf; her son, Alvin Wayne (Diane) Holst, Bettendorf; her grandchildren, Stacy (Jason) Volmer, Sally Slavens, Zachary (Brooke) Slavens, and Mindy Miller (Chris Gingery); five great-grandchildren; a brother, Nick Dubil; and her sisters-in-law, Ethel Holst and Phyllis Holst.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Lucas Slavens; her sisters, Anna Korbelik, Mary Lieshner, Eva Jugenheimer, Rose Griffin, and Helen Glynn; her brothers, John Dubil and Andrew Dubil; and many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Memorials may be made to the Davenport Chapter of the Disabled Veterans or the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
