Obituary: John Van Maanen

A funeral service and Mass of Christian Burial for John W. Van Maanen, 60, of Viola, Ill., will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 7, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Davenport. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 6 (today), from 4-7 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, where a prayer service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Additional visitation will be held one hour prior to Mass on Thursday at the church.

Mr. Van Maanen died Saturday, March 2, 2019, at Genesis Medical Center, Aledo, Ill.

John Van Maanen was born Sept. 11, 1958, in Newton, Iowa, the son of John and Jennie (Nikkel) Van Maanen.

He married Kathy Ehrecke on Oct. 31, 2009.

He was an auctioneer and a farmer.

His hobbies were woodworking, playing cribbage, playing practical jokes, his Belgian horses, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife; his sisters, Bonnie (Vernon) Vander Weerdt, Sully, Iowa, Betty Polman, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Marva (John) Tolson, State Center, Iowa, Joy (John) McGinley, Newton, and Norma (Bill) Rozendaal, Grinnell, Iowa; his mother-in-law, Ella Ehrecke, Walcott; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank (Lori) Ehrecke and Beth Ehrecke, all of Davenport, Chris (Jim) Green, Long Grove, Steve (Julie) Ehrecke, Muscatine, and Anne (Mike) Hunter, East Moline; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Kenneth Ehrecke; and a brother-in-law, Bert Polman.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Catholic Church in Viola, or to the family for diabetes research.
