Obituary: Janice Uitenbroek

Janice Uitenbroek, loving wife, caring mother, and proud grandmother, died on Dec. 5, 2018, at the age of 74, in Johnston, Iowa, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Janice were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 16550 290th St., Long Grove. Burial was in St. Ann’s Cemetery. The family greeted friends Monday from 9 until 11a.m. at church.  Memorials may be made to: St. Ann’s Catholic Church.

Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Janice was born on Jan. 27, 1944, in Madison, Wis., to Nathan and Lucille (Schernecker) Baker.  She graduated from Madison East High School in 1962 and Dominican College and Sisters Convent in Racine, Wis., in 1967.  Following her schooling, she taught high school English in Little Chute, Wis.

She married Mark Uitenbroek on May 12, 1972 in Madison.  After living a short time in Horicon, Wis., they moved to Park View, where they raised three boys, Nathan, Aaron, and Peter.  Janice served as the religious education coordinator for St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Long Grove for several decades and finished her career teaching at Lourdes in Bettendorf.  Janice also served several terms on the North Scott School Board. Janice lived a life of service to God, family, friends, and neighbors. Her faith in God was an inspiration and comfort to many.

Janice is preceded in death by her husband Mark, her parents Nathan and Lucille Baker, and brother-in-law Jim Severson. She is survived by her three sons, their wives, and her eight grandchildren.  Nathan and Jennifer Uitenbroek (Jackson, Owen) in Dickinson, Texas. Aaron and Lynsey Uitenbroek (Katie, Chloe, Avery) in Johnston. Peter and Stephanie Uitenbroek (Maggie, Stella, Molly) in Lake St. Louis, Mo.  She is also survived by her sisters and brothers and their spouses: Donna and William Showers, Bonnie Severson, Rod and Laurie Baker, Robert and Marilyn Baker, and Luanne and John Fajans.
