Obituary: Ima Riessen

Ima W. Riessen, 97, of Walcott, passed away Friday, Feb. 23, 2018, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.

Ima was born in Muscatine County on July 19, 1920, to Harry and Wilma Bockwoldt Schlapkohl.

She graduated from Durant High School in 1937.  Ima married Melvin J. Riessen on Nov. 22, 1941, in Davenport.  He preceded her in death on Feb. 23, 2009.

In early years, she was a Walcott band parent, a 4-H leader and enjoyed ice skating with her family on Sunday afternoons.  She was a member of the Walcott American Legion Auxiliary.  Ima enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, playing the piano, and was an accomplished seamstress.  She and Mel enjoyed dancing and danced well into their 80s. She was an excellent baker and also enjoyed gardening and flowers.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, Feb. 27, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Bentley Funeral Home in Durant.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday (today) at 10:30 a.m. at Bentley Funeral Home.

Interment will be held at the Walcott Cemetery.

Ima is survived and lovingly remembered by her daughters:  Lynn (Don) Kenyon of Lebanon, Ind., and Cheryl (Dr. Lon) Uso of Cool, Calif., sons:  Terrance Riessen of Stockton, and Jack (Patricia) Riessen of Urbandale, eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, her sister Norene Boyle of Tipton, and her brother Vernon Schlapkohl of Durant.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her brothers:  Roland and Donald Schlapkohl.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Walcott American Legion or Walcott Fire Department in her memory.

The family thanks the staffs of Courtyard Estates of Walcott and Clarissa C. Cook Hospice for their loving care of Ima.
