Obituary: Harold Mikkelsen

A funeral service for Harold LaVern Mikkelsen, 88, of Pleasant Valley, was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, at Our Savior Presbyterian Church, Argo. Burial with military honors followed in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation was Monday, Oct. 30, from 4-7 p.m. at the Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport.

Mr. Mikkelsen died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017, at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline.

Harold Mikkelsen was born Nov. 4, 1928, in Creston, Iowa, the son of Claus and Lema (Standley) Mikkelsen.

He served in the U.S. Air Force, completing his military obligations in 1952.

He married Mary McMillan on Sept. 29, 1977, in Maryville, Mo. She died Sept. 13, 1995.

In earlier years, he owned and operated the Border Lakes Outfitting Company in Winton, Minn. He later worked as a tool and die maker for 21 years at the Rock Island Farmall Works, finally retiring from Swan Engineering Company in 1974.

He was a longtime member of Our Savior Presbyterian Church, and a member of the EAA Experimental Aircraft Association and the I-Club.

His hobbies were airplanes, watching sports, and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include a daughter, Debra Carlton; a son, Steve Mikkelsen; a stepdaughter, Carol Eberlein; two stepsons, Clyde and Bart Boyd; five grandchildren, Daniel, Nick, Josh, Lindsay, and Lema; five step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Delores Davis.

In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by a special friend and longtime companion, Patricia Lema.
