Obituary: Gaylen Fick

A celebration of life service for Gaylen R. Fick, 74, of Walcott, will be held from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Sunday, March 24, at the Durant American Legion. Private family inurnment with military honors will be in the Walcott Cemetery at a later date. The Bentley Funeral Home, Durant, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mr. Fick died Tuesday, March 12, 2019, at Mercy Hospice, Johnston.

Gaylen Fick was born Sept. 3, 1944, in Davenport, the son of Robert and Lillian (Untiedt) Fick. He graduated from Davenport West High School in 1963. He received an education degree from Wartburg College in 1967, and received a master’s degree in guidance from Northeast Missouri State University.

He served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam.

He taught in Fertile, East Greene, and Sigourney, Iowa, and then returned to Walcott, where he worked with his brother Ron, helped area farmers, and cared for his mother until she passed away.

He was a member of Durant American Legion Post 430.

His hobbies were watching sports and spending time with friends.

Survivors include his sisters, Beverly (Jim) Latorraca, Eagan, Minn., and Debra Fick, Urbandale; his brothers, Stan (Mary) Fick, Coal Valley, and Ron (Rita) Fick, Durant; a niece, Whitney (Moses) Collins; and nephews, Brian and Brent Fick.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Allen Fick.

Memorials may be made to the Durant American Legion.
