Obituary: Gary Mehrens

A funeral service for Gary L. Mehrens, 69, of Davenport, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Bentley Funeral Home, Durant. A celebration of life will follow at the Walcott American Legion. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 20 (today), from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Mehrens died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019, at Bettendorf Health Care Center.

Gary Mehrens was born Feb. 22, 1949, in Scott County, the son of Lester and Elvera (Best) Mehrens. He graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1967.

He married Carmella Frisch on Jan. 24, 1970, in Davenport.

He farmed his entire life in Scott County, where he was also a farm machinery mechanic.

He was a board member on the Scott County Landfill Commission, Scott County Planning and Zoning, and Farm Bureau director of Hickory Grove Township. He was known as the Mayor of “Dogtown.”

His hobbies were participating in tractor pulls as a member of the NTPA, going on road trips to farm shows, auctions and unique attractions, golfing, history, trivia, and visiting with customers, friends and family.

Survivors include his wife; his sons, Scott (Mary) Mehrens, Mountain View, Calif., and Jason (Michelle) Mehrens, Davenport; his grandchildren, Micah and Taiga Mehrens; a sister, Karen Gottsche, Walcott; a sister-in-law, Sandi Frisch, Walcott; and a brother-in-law, Dennis (Judy) Frisch, Durant.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Darold.
