Fred Peeters
Funeral Services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Fred A. Peeters, 94, a resident of Davenport, will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will take place in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. The family will greet friends from 3 until 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, with a prayer and time of sharing at 6 p.m. Fred passed away Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017, at Genesis East. His hayloft was full at the time of his passing and he is now enjoying the grand entry in the horse show in the sky.
Memorials may be made to Holy Family Parish, Catholic Service Board, or St. Patrick’s Society.
Fred was born on Jan. 5, 1923, in Davenport, a son of Fred and Edna (Horst) Peeters. He attended a one-room schoolhouse near Eldridge, graduated from Davenport High School in 1941, and attended St. Ambrose College. He was united in marriage to Mary T. Welch on Feb. 4, 1951, at Sacred Heart Cathedral. They have shared over 66 years of marriage.
Fred founded Peeters Construction which specialized in general contracting, home building, and land development. There are almost 30 subdivisions in Davenport that Fred played a role in. He donated the first piece of land that became the Duck Creek Parkway, from Jersey Ridge to Duck Creek Park. He also established Ponderosa and Mt. Joy Mobile Home Parks. In his earlier years he was a flight instructor and did crop dusting and built grain bins around the eastern part of Iowa.
Fred had a love of horses for most of his life, and was riding into his late 80s. He enjoyed showing horses and was a member of numerous local and national horse clubs. He was willing to try anything once, including riding a mule into the Grand Canyon at age 80, and parasailing at 86. Fred also enjoyed snow skiing, coaching his children in baseball and basketball when they were young, their annual Bix gatherings of family and friends, and the “O’Peeters” float entry in the St. Patrick’s Day parades.
Fred is survived by his wife, Mary, Davenport; children and their spouses: Fred “Tom” (Sally) Peeters, Davenport, Gail Peeters, Chico, Calif., Frank (Penny) Peeters, Davenport, Dan (Jane) Peeters, Eldridge, Tim (Christine) Peeters, St. Petersburg, Fla., Randy (Peggy) Peeters, Davenport, and Becky (Terry) Brase, Bettendorf; grandchildren: Caroline (Josh) O’Connor, Vaneesa Peeters, Stacey (Nick) Schlichting, Fred T. Peeters, IV, Justin (Lorrie) Peeters, Angela (Ryan) George, Matthew Peeters (Holly), Jena (Josh) Steiner, Toby (Merry) Brase, Jeffrey Peeters, Casey Peeters, Amanda Brase (Scott), John Peeters, Aaron Peeters, Henley Peeters; great-grandchildren: Flynn, Nat, Rosalind, Allison, Tyler, Lucy, Braeden, Isabel, Hannah, Hunter, Julia, Erika, Chase, Bryce, Colton, Dawson, Caden, Logan, Coy, Caleb, Emma, and Grant; a sister, Fay McCarrel, Lone Tree, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Helen Lorenze, Lillian Bell, Maxine Frauen, Gladys Wellendorf, and Kenneth, Everett, and Bobby Peeters. May they rest in peace.
