Obituary: Dennis Hoffnagle

A celebration of life service for Dennis C. Hoffnagle, 90, of Davenport, will be held at a later date. Per his wishes, the rite of cremation has been accorded. The Runge Mortuary, Davenport, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mr. Hoffnagle died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2019, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.

Dennis Hoffnagle was born Jan. 10, 1929, in Monmouth, Ill., the son of Miles and Maxine (Welty) Hoffnagle. He attended Lane Tech in Chicago, and graduated from The University of Iowa with a bachelor of arts degree in physical education and a master’s degree in education.

He was married to Ruth Woodhouse for 64 years prior to her death in 2015.

He taught for 36 years, including 30 years at Davenport Central High School, where he taught biology and earth science. He also farmed in the West Branch area in almost 30 years.

His hobbies were watching sports and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his sons, Charles (Sharon) and Matthew (Dana); his grandsons, Miles, James, Brian, Carl and Eric; seven great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Jim (Betty) and Warren (Carrol).

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Rex, and a brother, Larry “Buzz” (Doris).

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
