Obituary: Darwin Riessen

A funeral service for Darwin P. Riessen, 81, of Blue Grass, was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Blue Grass Presbyterian Church. Burial was in the Durant Cemetery, with military honors by the Blue Grass American Legion. Visitation was Friday, Feb. 22, from 4-7 p.m. at the church. The Bentley Funeral Home, Durant, assisted the family with arrangements.

Mr. Riessen died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2019, at his home.

Darwin Riessen was born Aug. 14, 1937, in Davenport, the son of Paul and Vera (Otto) Riessen. He graduated from Durant High School in 1955.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He married Phyllis Mordhorst on Sept. 1, 1956, in Davenport.

He farmed his entire life on the family farm in Muscatine County.

He was a member of Blue Grass Presbyterian Church and the Muscatine County Farm Bureau, a longtime member of the Quarter Horse Association, a former member of the Muscatine County Pork Producers, and a past president of the Muscatine County Beef Association.

His hobbies were playing cards, bowling, and dancing with his wife.

Survivors include his wife; his children, Paul (Jannell) Riessen, Tipton, Darrell Riessen, Portland, Ore., Denise (Mark) Forney, Camanche, and Darla Spencer, Blue Grass; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Marilyn Reimers and Deanna (Keith) Petersen, all of Durant, Delores Frey, Huxley, Iowa, and Beverly (William) Hart of Alabama; and a brother, Vernon (Jean) Riessen, Durant.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Bonita Riessen.
